Maximising your chances

The General Skilled Migration program in Australia has undergone updates for the new financial year, with several state and territory nomination opportunities currently limited. The program is scheduled to reopen in early August, with varying statuses across states.

Varied per state

State nomination opportunities vary: South Australia, Victoria, and Queensland are temporarily closed, while Tasmania remains open, and others have specific restrictions or criteria in place.

Prepare before August

Nomination programs for various states will reopen following the allocation of new quotas by the Commonwealth Government, with most states expected to resume in early August.

EOIs still allowed

Applicants can still submit Expressions of Interest (EOIs) where allowed, but state nominations will be issued only after new quotas are allocated, impacting application timelines for different states.

Updates and changes to General Skilled Migration program has now been released in response to the new Financial year updates.

Several nomination opportunities will remain ‘finite’ due to temporary closure of State and Territory nomination program, including applicants in visa subclass 190 [Skilled Nominated (Permanent)] and visa subclass 491 [Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)]. The program will be expected to recur after Commonwealth Government’s allocation of state nomination places for the year 2020-2021.

Reopening of General Skilled Migration for the year 2020/21 is scheduled from early August.

Below is the status of particular state nomination opportunities. Note that “currently open” means applicants who meet current criteria can apply for Expression of Interest (EOI) and nomination application IF state authority invited them. HOWEVER, the issuance of nominations will only be issued once the quota allocation has been placed.

  • SA:  Applications suspended until beginning of August.
  • NT: Currently open but closed for offshore applicants. New eligibility criteria for all applicants are in place.
  • WA: State authority is yet to publish updates; currently open.
  • NSW: 190 visa applications open but closed for 491 subclass.
  • TAS: Applications are open.
  • VIC: Temporarily closed for state nomination applications. Lodgement of EOI is still accepted, then state nomination applications can be pursued after new quota allocation.
  • ACT: DOHA to release quota; program temporarily closed.
  • QLD: Currently closed.

Important updates to the General Skilled Migration program mean state nomination statuses are changing. Ensure you meet the latest criteria and stay informed about reopening dates.

State nomination opportunities for General Skilled Migration vary. Check current status and prepare for the program’s reopening in August for updated quota allocations.

Nominations for NT, WA, NSW, TAS are assumed to be issued until the allocation of new quota.

However, SA, ACT and QLD will reopen upon release of new quota allocation.
